What is an En Bloc Capsulectomy Breast Implant Removal?

What is an En Bloc Capsulectomy Breast Implant Removal? | Las VegasNearly all breast implants used in the United States have a warranty of ten years. While some breast implants can last for many more years, some other implants need to be replaced in a much shorter span of time. It is important to remember that implants cannot last forever.

According to statistics collected by the manufacturers of implants, about half of breast implants need to be replaced within seven years. Some of the common reasons for implant problems are rupture, capsular contracture, and infection.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides breast implant removal to patients in Las Vegas, NV and surrounding communities.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture refers to the scarring that takes place around the implant. All implants – textured, smooth, above muscle, below muscle, round shaped develop a capsule. Breast implants are a foreign body, the body tries to separate the implant by creating a capsule around it as a wall from the implant.

The capsule may be soft and flimsy –like an unnoticeable film. Or it may become solid and painful –like a hard shell that might shrink and contracts with the passage of time. When an implant has a painful, hard capsular contracture, it is not risky in itself. However, the discomfort, may force women to wish for the removal of the entire implant along with the capsule.

En Bloc Capsulectomy

An en bloc capsulectomy is a surgical procedure performed to take out the breast implant and the capsule as a single entity. A complete en bloc capsulectomy is a thorough and meticulous cosmetic surgery that takes out every bit of the capsule, together with the piece that may be close to the ribs and the chest wall.

A partial capsulectomy leaves segments of the capsule in the breast pocket. The incision made during an en bloc capsulectomy may be an irritant to the leftover breast tissue, and this will stimulate production of fluid from the body. After an en bloc capsulectomy, it is essential to place drains to make sure the fluid exits from the breast pocket.

If a fresh breast implant is being placed, it is usually put in a fresh space. This means, if the original implant was positioned subpectorally, the fresh implant would be placed prepectorally. On the other hand, if the original implant was positioned prepectorally, the fresh breast implant would be placed sub-pectorally. If the pectoralis muscle has been damaged or divided, it will be essential to repair the pectoralis muscle.

Capsulectomy without Replacement or Implant

The surgeon will have to leave the drains for a longer time to remove the fluid, for patients who go through the implant removal procedure and en bloc capsulectomy but without a replacement of the implant. Patients who are left with excess breast tissue may require a mastopexy or a breast lift plastic surgery to reposition any leftover breast tissue to reconstruct a breast mound.

How should you prepare for surgery?

It’s logical and necessary to stop smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol, a few of weeks before your En Bloc Capsulectomy, because, both of them increase the chances of swelling and bruising. All supplements and medications should be stopped at least two weeks prior to the surgery. On the day of your procedure, make sure you have someone who can drive you home.
