Lymphedema Post Plastic Surgery

Lymphedema is the condition in which the functioning of the lymphatic system is impaired. This can be critical because the lymphatic system plays a vital role in our body’s immune system and protects us from foreign substances. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides lymphedema post plastic surgery treatment to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding locations.

How is Lymphedema Diagnosed?

Persons who have recently undergone cancer surgery that involves the lymph nodes or those who have had plastic surgery are likely to show signs and symptoms of lymphedema.

In patients who do not show obvious symptoms of the condition, the surgeon may require imaging tests to check the condition of the lymphatic system. The common tests include:

  • MRI Scan which uses radio waves in a magnetic field to produce high-resolution, 3-D images of the system
  • CT Scan in which x-rays show cross-sections of the body structures to reveal blocks in the flow of lymph
  • Doppler Ultrasound which uses high frequency sound waves to bounce off the red blood cells and give a picture of blood pressure and flow
  • Lymphoscintigraphy in which radioactive dye is injected and scanned using a machine to image the lymphatic system and find blocks in the flow of lymph.

Lymphedema Treatment Methods

Lymphedema treatment is done at different levels, based on the degree to which a patient is affected by the condition. Some of the early-stage treatments include:

Exercises

Patients are encouraged to perform light exercises to move the affected limbs to improve the drainage of lymph fluid.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) Massage Treatment Post Surgery

The success of post-surgical advanced manual lymphatic drainage massage lies in its gentleness. Most experts believe that heat and deep massage are counterproductive in a post-surgical setting; thus, it is important that you NOT substitute deep tissue massage, Swedish massage, or other massage technique for this advanced treatment. Your specific treatment plan—including when to begin advanced MLD and how frequently you should receive treatments—will depend on the surgical procedure you had and your unique state of health.

Post-surgical MLD is an advanced technique requiring specialized training, and should only be performed by a licensed massage therapist. If you have had—or if you are planning to have—a mastectomy or a cosmetic procedure such as a facelift or liposuction.

Compression Garments

When exercising, patients have to wear a long sleeve or stocking made of special material that causes compression of the arm or leg. This helps the lymph to flow away from the affected limb.

Pneumatic compression

Here, the patient wears a special sleeve over the affected arm or leg. The sleeve is connected to a pump which periodically inflates the sleeve. By creating external pressure on the limb, this technique helps to move the lymph away from the toes and fingers.

Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

This is a comprehensive approach in which different therapy techniques are combined with changes in lifestyle for better outcomes.

Surgery for Lymphedema

Different types of surgical procedures are used to treat lymphedema. In Lymphatic Bypass procedure, lymph vessels are reconnected to drain into the venous system. Vascularized Lymph Node Transfer involves harvesting of lymph nodes from one part of the body and surgical implantation into the affected area to rebuild the failed lymphatic system.

After a diagnosis of lymphedema is confirmed, doctors initiate treatment through non-surgical procedures, and advice the patient to adopt good skin care and elevation of the extremities. When such measures fail to control the lymphedema, there is no alternative to surgical treatment. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards receives patients from Las Vegas, NV, and nearby areas for lymphedema treatment.

Nipple Plastic Surgery

Women often fret over the appearance of their breasts, wondering if they are the right size and shape. Sometimes, it is the appearance of the areolas and nipples that is the source of worry. While there is no right and wrong shape and size for breasts, nipples and areolas, areola reduction surgery can certainly help you achieve the look you want.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides nipple and areola reduction surgery to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding locations.

Who is a Candidate for Areola Reduction Surgery

The size and shape of your areolas is often determined by genetics. However, it may change with age or due to weight gain, or following pregnancy and breast feeding. In most of these situations, the change is caused by a loss of skin elasticity that makes it sag. This is not a medical issue but may be a cosmetic one.

If you are unhappy with the shape and size of your areolas or nipples, areola reduction cosmetic surgery can help you gain the exact appearance you desire. It may also be combined with other cosmetic breast surgery techniques such as breast lift or augmentation or breast reduction surgery for best results.

About Areola Surgery

Areola reduction plastic surgery is a procedure used to decrease the size of the areola which is the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple. It is also useful to deal with puffy or prominent nipples. The surgery itself takes around 1 to 2 hours and the difference in shape and size of the areola is visible soon after.

What the Procedure Involves

Areola reduction procedure is performed at the doctor’s office or clinic or in a hospital on an outpatient basis. A tiny incision is made around the nipple, a little of the dark part of the areola is removed and the cut is then closed with dissolvable sutures. Overnight stay in the hospital is not necessary, and after the anesthetic effect wears off, you will be sent home. You have to see the surgeon after one week for a follow-up.

Post-Surgical Care

Your surgeon will advise the following after areola reduction surgery for a safe and quick recovery:

  • Use an ice compress to reduce swelling of the breast.
  • Avoid reaching above your head and bending over for the first few days after surgery.
  • Do not lift things weighing more than 1 kg during this recovery period.
  • Wear a support bra for at least 3 weeks after the surgery to support the breasts and avoid discomfort or soreness.

Within a few days of the surgery, you can have a shower and get back to your routine level of activity. Changes in the size and shape of the areola will be visible soon after the surgery.

Over time, the minor scar left at the site of the incision will also fade away, leaving you with the perfect breast appearance you desire. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards receives patients from Las Vegas, NV, and nearby areas for nipple and areola reduction surgery.

Mole and Skin Tag Removal Options

Moles are skin cell clusters that may appear on any part of the body. They are generally black or brown in color and appear before the age of 20. Moles are generally harmless but if you find them getting in the way when you dress or shave, or if you don’t like the way they make you look, it is best to get the mole removed.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides mole and skin tag removal procedures to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding communities.

Mole Removal Procedure

Mole removal involves a simple surgical procedure that your cosmetic surgeon can perform in their office or an outpatient department in a hospital. Doctors generally use one of the following methods to remove your mole:

Surgical shave

This involves numbing the area around the mole and then shaving off the mole using a tiny blade. A little of the underlying tissue is also removed. No stitches are necessary. Surgical shave works best for moles that are small in size

Surgical excision

In this method, after numbing the area, the doctor cuts out the entire mole using a circular blade or a scalpel. Some of the surrounding skin is also taken off, and then the wound is stitched to close the cut.

Skin Tag Removal

Skin tags are small bits of skin-colored tissue that are attached to your skin through a narrow stem. They generally occur in areas prone to friction such as in the armpits and the groin, under the breasts or on the eyelids and neck.

If you find the skin tag uncomfortable or think it mars your appearance, you can have it removed at your surgeon’s office. Skin tag removal may be done in any of the following ways:

  • Snipping: After numbing the area, the doctor cuts away the skin tag using special scissors.
  • Burning: Using an electrode, the doctor makes an electric current flow through the skin tag which dries and then falls off.
  • Freezing: Using super-cold liquid nitrogen, the surgeon freezes the skin tag which falls off after around two weeks of the treatment. This method called cryotherapy is effective, but it may irritate the surrounding skin.

All of these procedures are not entirely pain-free and therefore, doctors use an anesthetic to numb the area before the procedure. If there is any bleeding, they apply medication to stop it and bandage the area. Marks or scars are rare after skin tag removal procedures. Skin tags generally don’t grow back after being removed; however, new ones may appear on other parts of the body.

Removing Moles and Skin Tags at Home

It isn’t safe to cut off skin tags at home with nail clippers. Avoid the use of paste or lotion for mole removal. These home remedies may lead to infection, bleeding or scarring of the area. The safe way to remove the moles and skin tags is to consult a doctor who can examine them, and choose the best mole and skin tag removal procedure.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards receives patients from Las Vegas, NV, and nearby areas for mole and skin tag removal.
