Liposuction

LIPOSUCTION OVERVIEW

Liposuction (also referred to as lipoplasty or liposculpture) is a surgical procedure undertaken by patients seeking to reduce the persistent fatty deposits found between the layers of muscle and skin, and is an effective means of creating a more a more sculpted physique, with streamlined contours and enhanced muscular definition. The stubborn fat pockets addressed during a liposuction procedure are typically resistant to traditional fat-reduction methods (i.e. diet and exercise programs) and are usually the result of one’s genetics, rather than an unhealthy lifestyle. These fatty deposits are frequently situated around the: thighs, flanks, neck, arms, waist, abdomen, back, chest, and buttocks, and liposuction surgery can be performed in all of these areas to efficiently eradicate the excess fat.*

Although female patients account for the majority of liposuction surgeries, the goal of achieving a lean, chiseled physique transcends gender boundaries, which is why liposuction procedures have continued to rise in popularity among male patients. Liposuction can be undertaken as a solo surgery; however, it is frequently performed in conjunction with ancillary body contouring procedures (i.e. breast reduction, abdominoplasty, arm lift, neck lift, etc.) for a more comprehensive overhaul of the physique.*

While all surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, the potential for surgical complications during and after liposuction surgery can be significantly reduced when the procedure is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in a properly equipped facility. At the private plastic surgery practice of Dr. Bryson Richards, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Richards takes pride in customizing each liposuction procedure to ensure naturally beautiful results, and he has helped many patients achieve optimal liposuction results in a safe, discreet environment.

LIPOSUCTION PROCEDURE

Liposuction surgery is typically performed on an outpatient basis under IV sedation, general anesthesia, or with a local anesthetic. The duration of your liposuction surgery will depend upon how much fat needs to be removed, and can take anywhere between 1-4 hours. During the procedure, Dr. Richards will make a series of very small incisions, through which he will insert a cannula (thin tube) attached to a surgical vacuum or syringe, which he will then employ to dislodge and suction out any surplus fat.*

There are multiple techniques that can be utilized during liposuction surgery, and after evaluating your general health, body shape, and cosmetic goals, Dr. Richards will select the appropriate surgical method from the following options:

  • Traditional (tumescent) Liposuction: conventional technique during which a tumescent solution (saline, epinephrine, and an anesthetic) is injected into the treatment area to facilitate the precise removal of excess fat, while minimizing bruising and discomfort
  • Power-Assisted Liposuction: similar to the tumescent technique but involves the use of a vibrating cannula to gently break up the fat cells, allowing them to be suctioned out with minimal damage to the adjacent tissues

LIPOSUCTION RECOVERY

At the conclusion of your liposuction procedure, Dr. Richards will firmly wrap the treated area to decrease post-operative bruising and swelling, and will provide you with a compression garment to wear for 3-4 weeks. The first 7-10 days after your surgery, you can expect to experience some degree of swelling, bruising, and fluid drainage. You will be given pain medication to minimize your discomfort and antibiotics to prevent infection during this time. Most of our patients are able to return to work a few days after their liposuction surgery, and to slowly resume their normal activities when it becomes comfortable to do so.*

When performed with proper technique, liposuction surgery leaves patients with only minimal scarring, which Dr. Richards strives to make as inconspicuous as possible. The newly improved contours of your physique will be visibly apparent after the initial fluid retention and post-operative swelling has subsided. Although the aspirated fat cells have been reduced during your liposuction procedure, it is important to live a healthy lifestyle in order to prevent weight gain and the production of new fat cells.*
