Nearly all breast implants used in the United States have a warranty of ten years. While some breast implants can last for many more years, some other implants need to be replaced in a much shorter span of time. It is important to remember that implants cannot last forever. 

According to statistics collected by the manufacturers of implants, about half of breast implants need to be replaced within seven years. Some of the common reasons for implant problems are rupture, capsular contracture, and infection.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture refers to the scarring that takes place around the implant. All implants – textured, smooth, above muscle, below muscle, round shaped develop a capsule. The capsule may be soft and flimsy –like an unnoticeable film. Or it may become solid and painful –like a hard shell that might shrink and contracts with the passage of time. En Bloc Capsulectomy

An en bloc capsulectomy is a surgical procedure performed to take out the breast implant and the capsule as a single entity.
