ABDOMINOPLASTY (TUMMY TUCK) OVERVIEW
Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery is performed to enhance the appearance of the abdominal region through the removal of excess fat, the excision of loose abdominal skin, and the lifting and tightening of the abdominal musculature, all of which facilitates the creation of flat, chiseled stomach contours.
Patients often seek out tummy tuck surgery to correct one or more of the following aesthetic problems:
- Stubborn pockets of abdominal fat, typically presenting as a tummy bulge or an abdominal ‘pooch,’ that persist despite the patient’s efforts to exercise regularly and make dietary improvements
- Abdominal skin laxity, which refers to the appearance of loose or hanging abdominal skin. Skin laxity in the stomach region can be caused by a number of factors, such as: pregnancy and childbirth, the natural aging process, hormonal imbalances, dramatic weight loss or gain, stress, and genetics
- A distended (protruding), sagging, or flabby stomach
- An undefined waistline
- Weak or atrophied abdominal musculature
As with all surgical procedures, abdominoplasty carries with it the potential for complications, and should only be performed by an experienced plastic surgeon with a high level of clinical expertise in the field of body contouring surgery. At the private plastic surgery practice of Dr. Bryson Richards, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Richards has helped many patients achieve lean, sculpted abdomens with tummy tuck surgery performed in his state-of-the-art facility.
TUMMY TUCK PROCEDURE
Your tummy tuck surgery will be performed on an outpatient basis, under either general anesthesia or IV sedation. A full tummy tuck typically takes between 3-5 hours, while the less invasive partial or “mini” tummy tuck takes approximately 1-2 hours. During your abdominoplasty, Dr. Richards will make a horizontal incision just above the pubic area. Although the exact length of this incision, which extends toward the pelvic bones, will depend upon the amount of skin requiring excision, Dr. Richards will make every effort to keep the incision concealed within your bathing suit lines whenever possible.
For patients who present with significant abdominal skin laxity (loose, hanging skin) Dr. Richards will make a second incision around the circumference of the naval in order to remove the redundant skin. When necessary, Dr. Richards will perform liposuction to reduce abdominal fat deposits, and will utilize sutures to repair and strengthen the underlying abdominal musculature, before repositioning the navel to a more aesthetically desirable position. At the conclusion of your surgery, Dr. Richards will make the appropriate accommodations for fluid drainage, suture the incisions closed, and apply a dressing or compression garment.
ABDOMINOPLASTY RECOVERY
You will notice visible improvements in the appearance of your abdominal region immediately after your tummy tuck procedure, and these results will continue to improve over the next few months, as any residual swelling subsides. While the duration of every patient’s abdominoplasty recovery varies to some degree, all patients will be advised to abstain from strenuous physical activity for at least six weeks after their surgery. Some patients elect to take up to a month off from work to promote optimal healing and a successful recovery.
