ARM LIFT SURGERY (Brachioplasty)
During the course of the natural aging process, elasticity and collagen levels in the skin of the upper arm begin to decrease, and the underlying layers of fat, muscle, and bone in this area also begin to deteriorate. These biological changes frequently trigger a loss of firmness in the upper arm skin, and have the potential to create the dreaded ‘batwing’ appearance (where the skin hangs loosely below the upper arm).
The aforementioned visible signs of aging in the upper arm region are often exacerbated by congenital and/or environmental factors (i.e. significant weight loss, genetics, and gravity). Although working out can help to boost the muscle tone and strength of the upper arms, it will not correct aesthetic issues caused by skin laxity (skin looseness, hanging skin), nor will it address the problem of stubborn fat deposits in the upper arm area.
Fortunately, upper arm lift surgery (brachioplasty) is able to achieve what exercise alone cannot, and serves as an effective solution for patients who present with skin laxity issues and/or persistent fat pockets in the upper arm region. Brachioplasty is often an excellent option for patients who have experienced dramatic weight loss (after bariatric surgery or a more traditional diet and exercise program) that has left them with large amounts of excess, sagging skin in the upper arm area.
While all surgical procedures carry some degree of risk, the potential for surgical complications during and after brachioplasty surgery can be significantly reduced when the procedure is performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in a properly equipped facility. At the private plastic surgery practice of Dr. Bryson Richards, located in Las Vegas, Nevada, Dr. Richards takes pride in customizing each arm lift procedure to ensure naturally beautiful results, and he has equipped his office with state-of-the-art equipment to facilitate optimal surgical outcomes in the safest possible environment.
ARM LIFT PROCEDURE
Brachioplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia, and typically takes about 2 hours to perform. The standard arm lift incision begins in the armpit and runs down to the elbow along the bicep muscle groove, which helps to minimize the visibility of the incision scar. Dr. Richards will utilize this incision to remove fat deposits and excess skin, before tightening the remaining skin and drawing it together to create a taut, smooth appearance. Arm lift surgery is often performed in conjunction with other cosmetic body contouring procedures (i.e. liposuction, thigh lift, tummy tuck) for a more comprehensive body sculpting effect, and to create a slimmer, more defined physique.
ARM LIFT RECOVERY
After your arm lift procedure, you may experience temporary tightness and swelling in your upper arm region, as well as tingling or numbness in your hands. These side effects are generally mild, and will resolve on their own within a few days. Any postoperative pain or discomfort can be managed with medication, and you will be advised to limit your physical activity for the first 2-3 weeks after surgery.
Your stitches will be removed in approximately 7-10 days, and you should be able to return to your normal schedule at this time (with the exception of strenuous physical activities). It is important that after your surgery you avoid sun exposure or use proper sun protection (SPF of 15 or higher), in order for your surgical scars to heal properly.
