Calf Augmentation

Since calf augmentation surgery is a major medical procedure, taking preparatory measures for it would ensure a safe and successful result. The calf augmentation procedure starts with an incision on the natural contour of your lower legs before inserting silicone implants to enhance the size of your calves.

However, before your cosmetic surgeon determines your candidacy for the surgery, you will have a preoperative discussion. In this discussion, your surgeon will give you preparatory guidelines, which you must strictly abide by. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides calf augmentation to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding locations.

Preparatory measures and guidelines for calf augmentation

  1. You should stop smoking for at least some time (if you are a smoker) before and after your surgery. Generally, your cosmetic surgeon will give you a window within which you should not consume any tobacco products.
  1. If you take any supplements, NSAIDs, or blood-thinning medications, it is important to refrain from it for at least two weeks before surgery. If the situation demands, your cosmetic surgeon will extend thistime period, depending upon your recovery.
  1. Also, if you take any drugs prescribed by your physician, consult with your cosmetic surgeon to see if any adjustments in the medication are necessary.
  1. Avoid infection risks by washing your lower legs thoroughly, maintaining proper hygiene.
  1. Protein intake will help you in your postoperative recovery. Hence consume lean proteins and stay hydrated.
  1. Maintain a proper sleep schedule before your surgery.
  1. Follow your exercise routine before your surgery. Although it is important to refrain from physical activities after your surgery, maintaining a fit body prior to the procedure will help you achieve a desirable result.
  1. Generally, your cosmetic surgeon would ask you to complete some diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests. Get these done as soon as possible since it is important in your pre-op consultation.
  1. Arrange professional help to boost your post-operation recovery. This way you can get assistance in emptying your surgical drains, taking medicines properly, and moving around your house.
  1. After your surgery, it is important to take an Uber or a driver to get you back home. Refrain from driving yourself back home.
  1. Wear something loose and comfortable on the day of your surgery. It is better if you are accompanied by a responsible person.
  1. Your cosmetic surgeon will advise you to not have any food 8 hours before your scheduled time of calf augmentation surgery.

Preparatory guidelines for postoperative recovery phase

It helps to plan ahead and buy the necessary first aid such as gauze, bandage, and compression garments. In addition to that, make a note of all the antibiotics, ointments, painkillers, and anticoagulants that you will need after your calf augmentation surgery.

You should apply for leave at your workplace for at least one week well in advance. You may also inform your employer that for a few days after your rejoin work, you would have to avoid physically strenuous work. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards receives patients from Las Vegas, NV, and nearby areas for calf implants.

Calf Augmentation

Calf augmentation surgery promises a desirable shape and definition of your lower legs. While it gives a robust appearance, this procedure can also improve your lower body proportion. However, in order to get this refreshed body symmetry, you will need to go through a cosmetic surgery that lasts from one to two hours.

It is important to understand the procedure so that you would feel more confident before making a decision. Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides calf augmentation to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding communities.

Anesthetic procedure

Depending on your requirements, your cosmetic surgeon will either use local or general anesthesia. Generally, for smaller implants, local anesthesia would suffice but for those who need enhanced and muscular lower legs would need multiple implants, hence the need for general anesthesia.

If you need to undergo additional procedures such as thigh lift or buttock lift along with calf implants, general anesthesia could be the best option. The decision is made in consultation with an anesthesiologist. Also, the anesthesiologist will be present in the surgery room to monitor your vitals and response to anesthesia.

Incision

Once the anesthesiologist confirms your positive response to anesthesia, your surgeon will create incisions in the targeted areas of your lower leg. The size of each incision depends on the size of your custom silicone and the extent of augmentation required. Moreover, your plastic surgeon will ensure that incisions will be invisible from plain sight, and less prone to scarring.

Insertion of silicone implants

After incisions are created, your surgeon will then create a pocket to insert the silicone implants. This is the pivotal part of this procedure. While doing this, your surgeon will ensure that the implant is placed behind your tissue, in such a way that you will not feel them after the surgery. As soon as your recovery is complete and swelling is resolved, your new lower legs would look natural as before.

Closing the incisions

Upon double-checking the placement of implants, the incisions will be closed using sutures. Generally, dissolvable sutures are used for the purpose. If the situation demands, your surgeon may also insert temporary drain tubes below the area of the incisions to collect excess fluid. Drains and sutures are removed within a week or two, depending upon your needs.

After covering the incision areas with bandages, you will be put in a post-operative ward wherein your surgeon will monitor your recovery for a few hours. If you don’t show any signs of abnormal discomfort, you can return to your home the same day after your calf augmentation surgery.

Change in surgical plans

If your calf augmentation surgery is performed in conjunction with other procedures such as tummy tuck or buttock implants, there will be a slight change in surgical procedure steps. With additional procedures such as liposuction or fat transfer surgery, your lower legs will get a more defined shape.

Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss these additional procedural steps with you prior to your surgery. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards receives patients from Las Vegas, NV, and nearby areas for calf implants.

Calf Augmentation

If you need to enhance the size and definition of your lower legs successfully, when a diet and exercise routine has failed to help, you should consider having a calf augmentation surgery. Although the cosmetic surgery is fairly straightforward, you still need to be aware of the potential risks and complications involved in this procedure.

Board certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryson Richards provides calf augmentation to patients in Las Vegas, NV, and surrounding communities.

Potential risks

The goal of calf augmentation is the insertion of silicone implants into your lower legs. For this, your surgeon will have to make an incision. The risks associated with calf augmentation are similar to what one could face after having any other plastic surgery.

The risks include abnormal bleeding during the surgery, chances of bacterial infection, blood clotting, and asymmetrical shape in both legs. More severe complications include deep vein thrombosis, numbness as a result of nerve damage, altered skin pigmentation, and fluid accumulation beneath the skin.

While many of the aforementioned risks do sound critical, you can avoid their occurrence by choosing an experienced plastic surgeon.  You can also reduce the risk of revision surgery if you have your procedure done by a reputable surgeon.

How to avoid infection?

Even though the infection can lead to many complications, it can be avoided by choosing an appropriate surgery center that follows the advocated quality standards and adheres to the best safety protocols. A sterile environment can significantly reduce infection risks. In addition to that, you should be prepared to follow your surgeon’s guidelines. The first few days following your surgery are crucial, and you must protect your incisions from getting infected.

The difference in skin sensation

Generally, patients do feel numbness in the implant region after the calf augmentation surgery. However, this doesn’t persist for a prolonged period. If you still experience a difference in skin sensation after a few weeks, then it is better to consult your surgeon. Sometimes the numbness might become permanent. An experienced surgeon will take preemptive measures to reduce this risk.

Risk of unfavorable scarring

Calf augmentation is not a general surgery procedure. A skilled plastic surgeon creates a customized plan for their patients. This allows them to place incisions in a discreet location. However, scarring can only be avoided to an extent. To improve your scarring, your surgeon will most likely prescribe you a post-surgical ointment depending on your skin type.

How to mitigate risks associated with calf augmentation

Choosing an experienced cosmetic surgery will significantly reduce the risks and complications. Along with that, you should follow their preparatory and post-surgery recovery instructions. It is important to avoid smoking before and after your surgery.

In so far as the post-surgery care and recovery are concerned, it is best to take plenty of rest in the first few days. Take your medications and antibiotics properly. Wear a compression garment, if your surgeon has advised, and avoid participating in strenuous physical activities till you have completely recovered.
