WHAT IS A BODY LIFT?
After extensive and rapid weight loss, the body is often incapable of conforming to its new, smaller proportions, which leads to the accumulation of loose skin where layers of fat previously existed. Excess skin is not an aesthetic issue that can be resolved through non-surgical methods (i.e. topical creams/gels, diet, exercise), and if left untreated, it can result in the development of aesthetic and/or emotional problems, such as:
- Hygiene issues, rashes, and infectious sores as a result of the mobility restrictions created by the hanging skin
- Loose, sagging skin draped awkwardly on the body, creating uneven or disproportionate body contours
- Difficulty finding clothing that fits appropriately
- Drooping, hanging skin serves as an undesirable reminder of one’s pre-weight loss physique and impairs the aesthetic results of the patient’s weight loss efforts
Body lift surgery provides an effective means of addressing and correcting the aforementioned aesthetic issues, and is performed to improve the contours of the patient’s body through the excision of surplus skin and fat. Body lift surgery is an optimal choice for patients who have lost a significant amount of weight after bariatric surgery (i.e. Lap-Band surgery or Gastric Bypass surgery) or a diet and exercise program, and it serves to facilitate the creation of a more streamlined, lifted, and toned physique.
Although drastic weight loss is typically the primary cause of loose, sagging skin, body lift surgery is also an appropriate choice for patients who are suffering from loose skin in the abdomen, buttocks, thighs and upper arm regions as a result of the natural aging process, sun damage, pregnancy, and/or genetics.

BODY LIFT PROCEDURE AND RECOVERY
Body lift procedures can be tailored to address the specific concerns of each patient, which is why they vary significantly in terms of scope and extensiveness. Body lifts often focus on one or more of the following areas: buttocks, groin, thighs, hips, and/or abdomen (extending around the sides to the lower back region). A complete lower body lift is a comprehensive surgery that targets the hips, waist, buttocks, abdomen, and thighs in a single procedure, and may also help to minimize the appearance of cellulite (dimpled skin irregularities).
Your body lift surgery will be performed under general anesthesia, and the duration of the procedure, as well as the incision placement and pattern, will depend upon the location of the treatment site(s) and the amount of excess skin requiring excision. A complete lower body lift generally involves an incision around the entire circumference of the body, followed by the removal of an apron of excess fat and skin, and the tightening and repositioning of the tissues. If the patient presents with a large amount of fatty tissue, liposuction may be employed in conjunction with the body lift surgery.
At the conclusion of your body lift procedure, deep support sutures will be meticulously placed within the underlying tissues to support the newly-formed contours of your physique. Although you will notice visible improvements in the shape of your body immediately after surgery, your final results may take 1-2 years to fully develop. These results should last for many years, provided you maintain a relatively stable weight.
